Breaking Cycles
Wellbeing demands we each have five things:
- safety
- stability
- mastery (control and choice)
- social connections
- meaningful access to relevant mainstream resources
Across our country, people, families, and whole communities are struggling to meet their needs in each of these Five Domains . Too often, they are involved in services and systems that support progress in one domain at the expense of another—increased safety that leads to decreased stability and greater social isolation, for example.
The result is intergenerational cycles of poverty, violence and trauma.
But a few outstanding interventions and community-based organizations show us all what is possible: we can break these cycles and change life trajectories if we ensure that what is done in communities and in systems increases access to these Five Domains.
